Constructor

Constructor = A creator or builder of music using multiple methods of composition, direction and conducting.

The Constructor Project has developed in response to Moor to Sea’s work with young people and young adults attending Lifeworks community projects over the last 3 years. We noticed emerging themes in interests and skills, as we respond to the young people’s communicated preferences.

We found a group of musical, creative, talented young people and young adults, who need to express themselves through music. Sometimes by playing instruments but also by using things like movement, gestures, and art to direct other musicians. With Youth Music Funding, we were able to develop a dedicated project to delve into this further – What is an Orchestra? Is that accessible to us? What is a conductor or composer? Is that accessible to us?
If not, then what are the alternatives?!

This year-long exploration into “What are the alternatives?” has involved links with professional orchestras, visits from orchestral and non-orchestra musicians, experiments on traditional and non-traditional instruments, inventing and testing out varied methods of composing, making musical decisions, directing, structuring music, combining sounds – and finding ways to communicate all of this without relying on words.

After our Easter intensive week, we have 3 distinct pieces emerging, which we are looking to perform, or have performed by another ensemble in the very near future. Keep an eye on our social media for updates on when you can hear the debut performances of exciting original, new works.
